On December 3, 2018 America’s Top 100 Civil Defense Litigators® announced their selection of Cray Huber partner Michael Huber.  Selection is by invitation only and is designed to identify the most exceptional Civil Defense Litigators throughout the nation.  Candidates are carefully screened through comprehensive Qualitative Comparative Analysis based on a broad array of criteria, including the candidate’s professional experience, litigation experience, significant case results, representative high stakes matters, peer reputation, and community impact in order to rank the candidates throughout the state.  Only the top 100 qualifying defense litigators in each state receive this honor.  Less than one-half percent (0.5%) of active attorneys in the United States are selected.

Daniel Cray and Benjamin Beringer were successful in a retrial of a medical negligence case in DuPage County, Illinois where they represented a neurologist and his neurology practice group. Husband and wife were plaintiffs in the suit stemming from a 2008 spinal cord infarct two days post cervical spine surgery which rendered the 49-year-old husband and father of two a quadriplegic. The wife, who sued for loss of consortium, has been her husband’s 24-hour-a-day care giver for the last 10 years. This case was first tried in April-May 2016 to a defense verdict. Both trials were 3 1/2 weeks in duration. Plaintiffs’ economic damages exceeded $10 million. Plaintiffs requested $39 million at the first trial, but they did not specify any total damages sum at the second trial.

On November 14, 2018, Mike Huber participated in the ProAssurance/Rush University Anesthesiology Department Risk Management CME Seminar on “Sound Medicine:  The Impact of Communication in Healthcare.”

On November 12, 2018, a law student trial team from The John Marshall Law School coached by Cray Huber’s Andrew R. Manno and Anthony M. Sam won the Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition in Buffalo, New York.  Each year the University at Buffalo School of Law hosts one of the largest law school competitions in the country.  This year 32 law schools from across the country tried a fictional criminal case showcasing their trial advocacy skills.  Andy and Tony helped their law students learn the courtroom skills necessary to become national champions.

On October 16, 2018, Anthony M. Sam secured a defense verdict in an auto accident case which resulted in a fatality.  Tony represented the driver of a passenger bus who was driving on a rural highway in central Illinois when he encountered black ice.  The driver was able to steer his vehicle from the roadway, through a median and ultimately came to rest alongside the highway arguably saving the lives of 26 passengers aboard the bus.  Unfortunately, a pedestrian was standing in the median on the poorly lit highway at night and he was struck and killed.  At trial, Tony demonstrated that there was nothing that the bus driver could do to avoid the accident given the black ice, poorly lit highway and unexpectedly encountering a pedestrian in the median roadway.

On September 13, members of Cray Huber participated in the Race Judicata 5K run/walk presented by Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.  Race Judicata is the only running event geared towards Chicago’s legal community with proceeds benefiting CVLS, which provides free legal services to Chicago’s poor and working poor families.
